I was shocked when I heard about Angelina Jolie and her breast decision in May 2013. I am deeply concerned about what has happened to Angelina Jolie, at least if her official story is as reported in the media. I am even more concerned for the millions of women who await a similar fate as hers. Getting tested, being positive, and having her breasts surgically removed as a “preventive” measure. I am concerned about the treatment of non-diseases in general, and even more when the treatment is a kind of mutilation. And I am opposed to radical and harmful where the indication for them is doubtful. A woman's breast is an integral part of her. I concur that it may be removed as a self-preventive measure in dire circumstances. Being afraid of cancer without indication of the disease, however, is not one of them. Women after bilateral mastectomy are missing an important part of their bodies, which will do something to their mind and soul. Bilateral mastectomy is an effective measure in case of war. Are we at war, however, when a genetic test talks about likelihoods? And is bilateral mastectomy truly preventive and the best measure to be taken after a hereditary likelihood of disease has been diagnosed?
